02 Explorer with a burnt transmission.

So we bought this little jewel that has a 160K on it and proceeded to change
fluid, plugs etc; because it had been neglected for so long and it ran out
great after. Well the trans fluid was brown (old) went with a new filter and fluid.
Oh, and what the Hell was Ford thinking by not putting a dipstick in the damn thing? Anyway, properly filled it and a pain in the ass it was and it ran and shifted great for about 2000 mi. It began hard shifting and I thought well maybe it was low. went to pull the check plug and the fluid is burnt, damn.

So my question is what is compatible with it's set-up? It is a 2 wheel drive
4.0 V-6. I found a good used trans out of a 02 Mercury car, no idea what engine it had in it, but it does have a dipstick, thought that was cool at the least. Just looking for ideas, I don't want to spend the $$ on a rebuild and am trying to find a good used one but I need to know which ones to look for.

Thanks for any help with this fellas, it is appreciated.

I don't understand the question. What country are you in? Explorers are common as dirt at junkyards in the US, get the tranny from another with the 4.0L SOHC V6.

Otherwise, it's a 5R55(*) with "*" being a letter, E, S, or W. (probably not E, that was the 2nd gen 4.0L SOHC Explorer). Here is a list of potentially compatible vehicles (see the "Applications" list) but I do not know for certain of there are any issues with compatibility:

Otherwise I see these on ebay:

Thanks JC. I'm in TX. The car is an 02 Explorer XLS 4.0 2 wheel drive with a vin #
1FMZU62K72ZC7****.

I was trying to figure out which other makes/models I could hunt for
that had this transmission in them to narrow my search.

Thanks for the links JC. I'll wager I'm hunting a 5R55 W. I couldn't tell much
about the Expedition series transmissions though. Figures, I found a 97 with a
blown out spark plug..."Come get it deal". Needs a head or heilcoil.

In '02 it was probably a 5R55S, but a W may work too.

Expedition tranny won't work, the closest those get is a 4R70W which is used by the Explorer 5.0L V8 but not the 4.0L V6.

Well shoot. The guy just messaged me back to come get it. I wonder if I could trade it for a 55 s or W, hmmm.

I'd take and helicoil it. Running right it should be worth hundreds more, even if you decide to resell it. This assumes there's nothing else wrong. Since it doesn't run right if at all, kinda hard to make assumptions there.

The thing is, the Explorer 4.0L SOHC is prone to eventual timing chain problems. The tensioners get weak and the chain guide plastic cassette falls apart. At some point Ford improved the cassette but it's still prone to the same problem somewhere around 150K to 250K mi.

I also found out it doesn't have a title about an hour ago, ugg. Maybe pull the drive train out and put it in place of the 4.0. I wonder if the 97 would jive with the 02's computer. Another head scratcher.

I have a call out to a junk guy I know that has a 55W or S out of another Explorer to see if he wanted the Eddie Bauer for trade.

No the '02 computer can't be used for the 4R70W and it won't even bolt on, different bolt pattern.
