Just wanted to notify early 2002 4 Door Explorer owners to check your rear coil springs.

There have been quite a number of cases of the rear coil springs breaking near the top. I was doing the rear brakes and rotors on our October 2001 build XLT and confimred that we have the issue as well. We're well out of our extended warranty too. My dad, who owns the vehicle, plans to stop by the dealer to see what their take on the situation is.

Here are a few pictures of what ours looks like, this occured on both sides on the upper loops. Just one crack per side.

Driver side:

Passanger side:

For your safety I do encourage you to check your vehicle for this situation or have someone else check it for you. Make sure to let the suspension 'droop' so the crack can easily be seen.

That's good. Just remove the top section and it will be factory lowered.

Wow you can say that again! Good thing you found out the "easy" way and not the "hard" way out on the road!

i have a broken one, not too eager to fix it at $200/spring and then whatever the rate for repair. Still seems to handle fine.

You guys need to report this to NHTSA

cliro, you need to get the spring fixed, it's a safety hazard

If you guys do fix the springs and the dealer wont cover the repairs save youre reciepts in case enough people complain and Ford does a recall then you can get youre money back

would buying lowering springs fix this problem? or is there a aftermarket lowering kit that WILL solve the problem? Seems like as good a time as any to lower it...

yep, it will solve the problem since you would be replacing the factory springs
