Transmission model number?

I have a 2002 Explorer XLT with the 6 cylinder engine. I was looking in my Chilton manual and it lists 3 different transmissions. How can I tell what transmission I have? Is there a name plate or something that tell you? Each of the trannys listed uses a different ATF and I want to have some on hand in case I need to add a little.

What 3 are listed? The 6 cyl engine was a 4.0L SOHC, so should be a 5R55_ Don't all those use Mercon V? I thought so but could be wrong.

I assume you don't have a 5R55E because it has a fill tube and dipstick, with the dipstick stating on its handle what fluid it uses.

Have you checked the 2002 Owner's Manual? Fluid should be listed under a topic near the end like "Capacities And Specifications". A google search will find it.

The Chilton manual shows
6R60 tranny using Mercon SP ATF
6R80 tranny using Mercon LV ATF
All other trannys using Mercon V ATF

You must be looking at a manual for a wide range of model years. 6R didn't come out till around 2005 for 2006 model years with V8s. Yours has one of the 5R55, either 5R55S or 5R55W.

Here is the 2002 Explorer Owner's Manual. Page 308 states Mercon V.

That is just what I needed. Thank you. The manual covers 2002 to 2010 so a lot of range.
