Hey people, glad to found this board. We are looking at a 2003 Explorer Sport Trac as a work truck. Seem in great condition but needing to know more inside and out before we pull the trigger. Gonna spend some time lurking around here.

Have it checked out by a mechanic experienced with Ford trucks/SUVs, is money well spent as Explorers aren't rare so it's easy to move on if one has significant problems.

In particular, insist that the engine be cold when you arrive, so when it's started you can listen for timing chain rattle. Most if not all of the Sport Tracs have the 4.0L SOHC engine which has a significant problem with the timing chains once they get much past 100K mi., maybe even less if it was treated rough or just enough time passes that the plastic cassette guide for them starts to get brittle.

The engine has to be pulled to replace the chains and guides which is significantly more expensive, usually an $800+ repair, maybe approaching $2K at a stealership.

Hey There! I just joined as well.

I hope that the forum can help as I have a 1998 Explorer that 1) I love as a work vehicle 2) needs some work, much I can at least try to do myself.

I am hoping I can ask some questions of the members here.

lol, are you a real person or a bot to have just joined several different automotive forums this month and have posted nothing but a similar "hi" message on all of them?

It is very suspicious. Surely you do not own all these different vehicles but I suppose that is not a requirement for joining:
