Hello everyone...
I was thinking about buying a explorer and want to know what model I should buy from 05-09 and v6 or v8
Thanks in advance

I would focus more on particular specimens you see for sale in your area. One in very good condition at the right price will sell fast so maybe it's better to keep your options open for model year and be ready to take a look and hop on a good one when you find it.

For example you want the same things you'd want in any other vehicle, low mileage, low to no rust, maintenance records, nothing broken unless it's priced fairly with that taken into account.

Also an '05 is last year of 3rd gen and '06 to '09 are 4th generation. 4th gen is about 4" longer, 2" wider. It has a redesigned lift gate that doesn't have the plastic cracking issue, but that was largely attributed to how people grabbed and pushed on it when opening and closing the gate - but it's something to check for if looking at a 3rd gen.

Both of these came with the SOHC engines, you'd be happier with the V8. In 4th gen you could get a 6 speed tranny with the V8 which is good if you do a lot of high speed highway cruzing.

In 2008 they started coming with side airbags but besides the 4th gen looking more modern they are more similar than different, certainly the changes between 3rd gen and 4th are less than between 2nd gen and 3rd gen or between 4th gen and 5th gen. with 5th gen barely being an SUV anymore since it's unibody and lower ground clearance IIRC.

I'm going back to what I stated originally, I'd get whichever one you find that is in very good condition for the right price. Keep in mind that a newer model year will have better resale value even if it has the same or higher mileage, but buying used that also means you may be paying more for the newer model year and not get much else out of that if you plan to keep it till it's worth little.
