When do you need to change the timing belt on a 2012 Explorer? Does it last forever?

thanks

It's not a belt, doesn't need scheduled replacement.

Timing chain is not considered an owner serviceable maintenance item. They (Ford) consider it something the owner never needs to be concerned with, a "lifetime" part like your muffler or whatever, until you have some indication that it has failed.

People who are aggressive at servicing their vehicle might tell you that it's a "good idea" to replace it every 150K to 200K mi or so but most wait until they hear a rattling noise or a check engine light due to camshaft position sensor data out of range.

You didn't mention which engine you have, but on the 3.5L at some point they implemented a check for excessive chain stretch. When the chain is excessively stretched, the PCM detects the changes in camshaft position and sets code P0016 for crankshaft/camshaft correlation. See TSB 14-0194 for more information.

Edit: That TSB is for the ecoboost 3.5L engine but the same situation applies AFAIK.
