2016 broken windshield under cowl

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on this.

Our 2016 Explorer Limited developed a vertical crack coming from the bottom of the windshield to the lower third. We didnít think that anything struck the windshield, but spoke to the dealer and they told us to go to an auto glass place. After pricing out the replacement, it came to more than the insurance deductible of $500, so we opted to go through insurance. Since the crack has been getting worse quite quickly - no doubt due to cold weather/heating of the windshield - we decided to get it replaced ASAP.

Fast forward to this morning at the glass shop and the technician tried to determine how the crack was caused. He shone a flashlight down the glass and several cracks were visibility, emanating from the bottom of the windshield. When he removed the cowl, he called me back into the workshop to take a look. There is notch of outer layer glass broken off at the base just above one of the clips where the cowl joins the body. There is no damage to the cowl. To me, it looks as though the glass was struck with something prior to, or during, installation.

At this point, the glass is being replaced by the glass shop with a genuine Ford part. The side trim pieces are also being replaced. I could have gone back to the dealer and asked them to evaluate this for a warranty claim but I need this done today and the installer had already done some work. So my assumption is that Iím out my $500 deductible. Nonetheless, I would love to bring this to Fordís attention to see if they will pay my deductible. Any ideas who I should contact?

I doubt you'll have any luck with that.

1. You'd need the dealer to assess and submit it to Ford, not have 3rd party do it first.

2. It seems difficult to place blame. While being below the cowl line suggests it would be much harder for something to impact it, Maybe extremes of temperature rather than factory damage, still you'd need evidence and IMO it's hard to prove glass breakage is a factory defect if you accept delivery of the vehicle.

Ask the dealer who to contact but I suspect it will be a waste of time.
Good luck !

Thanks J_C. I did contact the dealer and they told me essentially the same thing. Any glass claim would need to be noted during PDI. They said that a warranty claim would just be denied. They did say that I could contact Ford directly. It seems like it just isn’t going to be worthwhile.

On the other hand if these recent and future record cold northern US temperatures cause a rash of 5th gen Explorer windshields breaking, maybe try to find a way to do a class action lawsuit, but that's probably months to years away if it were to happen at all.

I'm on the west coast, so no extreme cold. But sure if there's a class action I'll join and maybe get $5

^ Where was it made? Maybe extreme cold exposure at some point between there and delivery to you. It just seems like robots would catch something like that on a factory line, though a minor glass defect could grow over time. and has.

I'm confused. Here in GA a cracked windshield is covered under Comprehensive Insurance coverage and is replaced at no cost to the vehicle owner by said insurance...

^ Maybe cheaper insurance policy due to not covering that w/o deductible... somebody's got to pay for it one way or another.

Various insurance companies have a glass endorsement with no out of pocket expense. I have one here in Colorado as we replace windshields more frequent than tires.
