What exactly do you mean by it will shut off? No signs of life likebattery is disconnected, or just engine stalls?

I don't know what you mean by truck will surge forward. Anti-theft flashing could mean the PATS anti-theft has a problem but once it's running, for that generation at least, I didn't think that should cause it to shut off, just not start. Anyway I don't know all troubleshooting for PATS anti-theft but that often the fault on that is the transceiver module that sits on the ignition cylinder in the steering column.

I'm wondering if you might have more than one fault. Something else to check is whether the two big wiring harnesses in the engine bay are together good and free of corrosion. One screws to the firewall near the top and the other is on a bracket at top of engine a few inches in front of the firewall, IIRC though I'm not sure of the location on the V8.

    Good luck!

Hi. Sorry I didn't see your message sooner but for some reason email notifications from this site keep getting blocked by my ISP's spam filter. I'm a lot more likely to see new topic posts than messages.

Intermittent problems like shutting off but then working again are hard to troubleshoot if there's not OBDII fault code. In that case I'd suspect something electrical, but I don't know what. If it won't start for a few minutes then that seems to be the only time to catch the fault.

"Usually" if the fuel pump starts spinning it keeps spinning, unless there's an electrical wire shorting or connector corrosion. I'd sooner suspect something like the ignition coil controller starts to fail as it heats up and you could check for spark when it dies and won't start.

just got on here ...have an issue with my 99 awd v8 explorer ....while driving it will shut off but it will restart in a few minutes... seem to happen with half tank of gas. other times ill drive for days with full tank and then ill go to empty and fill up half tank and it sometimes will do it again ,,,shut off .. also if I turn OD off it will turn back on while driving or when I come to a stop some times. truck will surge forward then wont start engine lite flashing and anti theft flashing...then it starts and runs good for a while.. still no DTC's..I am a mechanic but I'm baffled and have had it to other shops and they are too... for its hard to get it to repeat... all the time...
