Intermittent gas guage

I recently replaced my fuel pump (2002 Explorer Sport 4wd) with lifetime O'reilly Auto parts. It lasted 3 months and I had to get another one. The new pump works fine except sometimes the gas gauge does not work. I know that the fuel pump assembly has the float for the gauge built in. Does anyone know if this is a common problem after replacing fuel pump. I am going to have my mechanic put it on his lift to see if wire is damaged or loose. I am 70 years old not too good at crawling around under my Explorer. Thank you Don
