2009 Explorer exhaust valve failure

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 2009 Ford Explorer V6 3.0. I love it. Great little SUV!

Unfortunately it's been sluggish and eating fuel. I get a code cylinder 5 misfire. The person I bought it from said the exhaust valve on cylinder #5 may be burnt. Thus, I got the vehicle for $3000 less than asking considering the potential repair cost.

I'm just wondering if this may be something as simple as a stuck valve? Are burnt exhaust valves common on these 3.0 V6 engines? If so would it be worth it to just replace the entire cylinder head with a brand new one?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

It's worth a try to use a lifter lube. If you can get the valve or lifter working again, use a high quality premium oil. My 2010 3.0 V6 has no valve issues. As far as replacing the head, that depends on what the problem is. If it's a lifter, then no. If it's a valve, you need to find out why the valve failed.
BTW, you did not mention mileage nor prior owners service records. That stuff is important when asking questions.

BTW, are you sure that the engine is a 3.0L?

How confident are you in this exhaust valve diagnosis? First thing I'd do is a compression or leak down test. I'd also hook up an OBDII scan tool that shows live data and look at the frequency of the misfires.

I'd pull the spark plug, examine it and make sure the coil is producing spark. If the pressure test above is good and you're getting spark, then I'd try checking the fuel injector connector for power and if getting power, swap that fuel injector to a different position and put new o-rings on them while you're at it, to see if the problem follows the fuel injector to the cylinder you moved it to.

As far as a visual test, you can get borescopes with a little mirror attachment that allow looking up at an angle towards the valves.
