Thanks in advance for your response.

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 6 Cylinder with 201,000 miles. The vehicle has been well maintained over the years. The transmission just died and needs to be replaced. I have received two quotes of $5900 (from a dealership) and $4400 from a private shop.

It does not make sense for me to put $5000 into it with such high mileage

Questions:
1. What is a ballpark value of the Explorer in it's current state?
2. What process should I go through?
a. sell to an individual
b. trade-in to a dealer when I get my new/used vehicle
c. part it out.

Please feel free to email me or reply back to the post. I am in dire need of advice from Ford people that know.

Thanks!

1. Depending on condition of paint, interior, body panels probably a couple grand tops.
2. Run it into a wall and collect insurance (kidding).
a. If you're honest with what it needs this is your best bet.
b. I would suspect they would not take it as a trade if they need to repair the transmission.
c. This is always a good option if you have lots of time to tear down and sell things, and a place to keep the truck.
