I have to replace the engine in a 2004 Explorer XLT 4x4, 4-door. The current engine is the V6 4.0 cast iron block. My two questions are will an aluminum block motor fit? Is there a difference between the engines in a 4x4 as opposed to the 4x2?.. Or are all 2004 v6 4.0 engines the same, cast iron or aluminum, 4x4 or 4x2, all the same? Thanks!

Eight dight of VIN

If you look at the 8th digit of the VIN number of your vehicle it will most likley be a ( K ) and they are the same on a 2X4 As A 4X4.

what ever vehilcle that it comes out of should have the same letter. then you can do a one for one swap.

see if you have any U-pull it yards around

you should be able to look at 2002-2005 explorers

vin (E) in Vin (K) vehicle

I have a 2004 Explorer with a VIN (K) 4.0l and the cassette went out of it and it wouldn't start I did a compression test on cylinder 2 and 5 and it had 0 psi. I sourced a 4.0l VIN (E) out of a 2002 and removed all accessories and put the 2004 accessories on it and it fired up like a champ. Back on the road again.
