OK guys - I know this has been a problem for a lot of Explorer owners, so I will put links up for this. If you go to the dealer, this would cost you around $900. Hope this will help someone...

One of the members at FTE and I worked on this, and Katzen made a site with instructions for the fix. Here is the link to his instructions:

Free Blend Door Fix

Here is the link to the thread about it. It has a lot of comments in it from people that have done the fix, including some extra helpful tips people have found:

FTE Thread

There is just too much info for me to try and retype it all, so I'll just put the links up and if you need the help, here it is....

What is this "blend door" problem or whatever that they keep talking about? And the instructions with the glove box totally lost me, I thought it was something about making the exterior doors "blending in more" and not show so much of a seam? But that makes absolutely no sense...man I am lost...

LOL!!!! I guess you haven't run into the problem yet.. (me neither - knock on wood)

The blend door is one of the controllers in your HVAC system. The Explorers are notorious for problems with them. The dealers will take the entire dash out, etc to fix the problem. This was a little easier of a fix...

Ohhh, I get it now. But I still don't get why they call it the "blend door fix"....
Oh well.

Anyway, thank God I haven't had any sort of problems in that "department" although the Ford Escort we used to own did have this problem, and luckily the local auto shop now that I read more about this did pretty much exactly this and saved us a ton of money. They were so happy too that they were able to make such a quick and easy fix, and save us a ton of money. This all happened because we had a problem with the heat in the car. It just wasnt heating up really at all and when they fixed it by just taking apart the dash of the Escort and fussing around with a few things they made a SIMPLE fix and only charged us for the labor to remove the dash ($120)...whereas we could've been charged around $700 and they easily could've charged us that instead and said they fixed the problem by other means!!!!!

I dont know if this is a fix for me or not, but when my fan is on (either ac or heat) im hearing a noise coming from just under my glove box. sounds like somethings caught in a fan making a "flicking noise" (kinda like when back in the day when you put b-ball cards on you bikes rims and everytime the tire spun it would flick) anyways it gets louder and faster as I turn up the speed of the fan. I dont know if somethings caught somewhere??? Maybe I shouldve started a new thread for this??

96Exploder, this seems like the most appropriate thread to discuss your problem in! I would say that something does definitely sound like it is caught in there.

Rob, do you know how I could go about troubleshooting this? Where to look.

Did you ever try taking apart your dash, undoing a wire hanger and making it as straight as possible and sticking it down the vents? I don't know how "successful" that would be but it's an idea. If something really is caught in there, then that would undo it I'd say. Either that or just take it to the dealer, and pray they can fix it.

No I havent taken apart anything yet, but its definetly coming from right below the glove box. So maybe tomarrow Ill fiddle around with it trying to locate the problem.

96 - I remember someone having a similiar problem before. I have been hunting the thread, but no luck yet. It seems like there is a flap valve or something that gets broken. I don't remember - I'll keep looking...
