Most times the automatic will slam into reverse after about 5 seconds of waiting and one of the forward gears either hesitates most anytime it shifts. Otherwise, once those obstacles have been passed the car runs fine. Once in a while it will hesitate going into a forward gear but always seems to make the next gear. The oil has been changed according to the book (3000) I took a transmission shop but they either really didn't know or the car was changing correctly when they tested the car several days later. Any ideas? The vehicle is a well kept 2003 my wife drives.

I know very little about trannys but would first try changing the fluid and giving the new fluid some time and a few drives long enough to heat it up, to work out years of gunk before trying something else.

I am confused about the results from the transmission shop. Did they bill you for a diagnosis then state they didn't know or that it was working properly? Might be time to try another shop.

"Tested the car several days later"? Could be they just don't want to fool with it, they should have had it in and out in a day for a simple diagnosis or advise to proceed tearing into it more. at that point. Multiple days, then nothing, is inexcusable unless they told you they were busy and it would take that long ahead of time.

If you check out the many YouTube videos, many experienced mechanics recommend we never change fluids, in trannies until they smell funky or are very dark! Did the shop put in Synthetic ATF?
